that is a 1985, even the differential and brake panel are different, some 85 ATC250es differential will interchange with a 1985 only trx250a and some don't depending on the frame serial number which is FM063995 and up, so there were two different ones in 85 but that still don't help you, you need 1986 up and you have no axle tubes to work with, not saying it can't be modified to work, but I have never done that mod ----- I went thru 2 stock 300 rear ends already this year, didn't tear up any gears but had water in both and a bearing failure on the brake panel side of one, I am just about to finish a 1996 300 2wd with a 250 rear end and disc brakes on the front, this one I painted camo and got away from the red, my buddies liked it but I didn't and repainted it all flat dark green camo, and it looks good, the other 300 stock rear end I have apart and doing seals and bearings one more time, collecting parts to do another conversion and all my 300 will be converted, seems I only get two years on the stock rear ends running them in water, my oldest bikes with the 250/350 rear end are over 5 years and still the oil looks great in them

you may find this hard to follow i'll try my best on the later year model bigreds where the axle tubes bolt up to the swing arm and this model the axle tube is welded to the swingarm so it is going to involve a lot more cutting and welding to mate it up to the 300 swing arm!!

the axle tubes of a TRX250A and the ATC250es Big Red from 86 up ( actually85 and a half ) are not welded to the swing arm and bolted on each side the differential, the one you have would have to have the swing arm cut off and you would have to do some welding, I have never looked into what it would all take to do it, one thing I could think of checking before going in too deep is if it will be center properly and the tires are in the same place on both sides if you get my drift ------------I don't see why you would not be able to make it work, I have never tried retrofitting that rear end before and I have found a few in the pass and passed on them, I hope you go ahead with the project and make it work so I can have another source for rear ends ----------- some points to pass along, the differential of the 85 Big Red is unique and only fits the 85 Big Red and early serial numbered 85 TRX250's, mid year of the 250 they changed the set up and got away from the swing arm being welded to the tube, the axle of the Big Red is 2 inches longer than the TRX250's so if you are trying to mix and match 85 1/2 up Big Red and TRX250 parts you have to use the same axle tubes with the axle that matches, the differential and all the bearings and seals are the same, there are a couple of different brake panels but I have had no problem using them, they look different but bolt up and work

Ohh so basically no one does the conversion!! The one being used is the one where the Swingarm bolts up to the brake panel.. Very aware as I've done one already off a trx250.... I got a almost new one sitting in my garage where Swingarm is also welded.. I gonna try it.. Just to see if it works that way I can do more

I'll play necromancer on this thread since it just popped up when I did a search.

So these diffs, and the TRX250 ATV diffs are the same, right?

When I bought a Rancher last week, the kid was selling it to fund a 300 build. He gave me the rear end out of the 300 he is working on, and it had a MAJOR bubba job on the rear end. It has about a 12" stretch that looks like it was done using 15 pieces of scrap metal one or two bits at a time.

It also appears to be this early 85 Big Red rear end, as there is the side tube going down that is welded to the axle tube. The axle appears to be there, the brake panel has been deleted (bearings still there, looks like they just cut it off leaving a little material around the bearings), and there are seriously about 5-6" spacers bolted to both hubs.

I was nosing around on the interwebs to see if I could take the diff, axle, hubs, and buy some used TRX250 axle tubes from the later style, bolt those to the diff, and basically modify this oddball rear end to be a backup for the TRX250 rear I have.

So basically the diff is the same, but the axle is a different length, so it won't work with TRX250 axle tubes, correct?

I'll take some pics when I get home. The rear on this thing is almost comical it's so bubba'd, but I, of course, saw a gold mine of potential spare parts.

the 85 differential housing is the same, thats about it, the hubs, axle and brake drum are different, you can cut the swing arm off that 85 and make it work but the axle and hubs would be a needle in a hay stack to find another, the brake drum is made like the front drums, where a seal goes around the lip, there is no brake cover on the 85 ----the pics are an 85 ATC250ES and a 86 ATC250ES
