I need advice on a passenger box

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the ATV world. I recently bought my 1st ever ATV and went with the Rancher 4x4 mostly because of the Honda reliability . Well the wife and I enjoy trail riding on a nice weekend so that's what we have been doing. Anyway I've experimented with a few ideas such as putting a cushion on the back rack for the wife to sit on. This works ok, but she says it puts her to high up. I've been looking at the Tamarack passenger type boxes but I'm afraid I will run into the same problem that being it will put her to high up. I currently have the large rear basket on the back, guess when you add the box you would remove this. Anyway can anyone give me advice on a box that would be low profile. Also the wife is a bit short so I've also been looking at the Tamarack stirrup type foot rest. Anyone using these?

what kind of cushion are you talking about that's putting her too high up? most of the "rear seat" bags and such have a cushion that's maybe 2" or so of foam and that compresses when you sit on it. i've seen some that are just a padded and covered board basically that go across the back rack, and they're maybe 1" or so thick, but that's about the same as a rack bag with a cushion just without the storage.

we always used a boat seat bolted to to rack very comfortable and if you get one of the nonpadded plastic seats itll only raise her up off the rack about a inch

Might need to get another quad for her! I think all the boxes will put her up too high. But if you get the foot rests she might be more comfy. Someone with a rear box might chime in.

I use one of the inflateable/adjustable hunting cushions. Gander Mtn, Dicks, etc sell them. The strap hooks around the rack and it stays right in place. I keep a couple of ratchet straps and ropes under the cushion too. These do spring slow tiny leaks over time but just open the air valve, let in a snort of air and off you go.
Edit: A photo of the cushion

Dyna, I don't mean to be a party pooper.......but...... be very careful about taking a riding on your Rancher. There are very significant reasons why there are multiple stickers on your atv that say 'No Passengers'. Taking a passenger on your atv strongly affects your 'center-of-gravity' (how easily your machine could tip over). It also affects handling and steering. There are a few atv's on the market (none that I would recommend) that will accomodate a passenger (referred to as riding 2-up). However, you won't find any such atv's in the Honda line. Hopefully, your wife will enjoy riding the atv so much that she will want her own (as my wife did).
Happy Riding!

If you do mount a seat/backrest, then try and mount it so that your passenger sits as close to you as you can comfortably handle so that it doesn't completely mess up your handling. I swapped out a backrest/storage box for a larger seat/ backrest/storage box combo in the search for more seat room during the rare occasion that my wife went riding with me and now with her on back it really bodged up my steering due to the larger box being mounted about three inches farther back. The closer your passenger is to the center the better, even at the expense of some of your own comfort. I've seen someone mount a riding mower high back seat to their atv rack and it was an awesome addition-but no storage, and it still opens up the problems with weight being on the rear end.

Kentco is 100% right about the dangers of riding two-up. Although we do it almost all the time we ride logging roads and we do it slowly. Being this is my first ATV I'm extra cautious not knowing what to expect with this type of riding.

Consider almost every ATV out there ( including mine ) have been modified with over size tires, lift kits, engine mods etc, we seem to be a group that takes risks and for the most part handle them with common sense and maturity.

I put a backrest and rear footpegs, the wife is happy and comfortable now. Don't fret y'all, I only do trails, and do them slowly and safely.
