20x10-9 to 22x11-9

Just bought a used 400EX and plan to ride it more on trails than sand or anything, as a result I'm concerned about ground clearance in the rear. In addition to getting a better skid plate for the rear it seems I could improve ground clearance by going from 20" tires to 22" tires. Stock are 20x10-9 and I see that I could get a few tires in 22x11-9. This tire would be slightly wider and so the tire would be 'pinched' slightly. Also, this would change the gearing.

Has anyone tried this?
Did you notice a difference in ground clearance?
Did you notice any difference in gearing?

I had my wifes tires off of her 250ex on my 400 and it was ok but they role bad in corners which is why I swapped them off of hers.As far as ground clearance and gearing change it was not noticeable.

Yes I have done this and my answer is yes to all the above questions...i am running 22x12x9 bear claws on my 87 250x and 22x12x9 spidertracks on my wifes 300ex we ride trails only lots of mud and sand with rock and gravel sections.....for gearing itll be like stepping up a tooth on the front sprocket itll stretch the gears out a bit but not enuf to bother the power much u will gain between 5-15 mph. U will gain about 1 inch ground clearance at best 1 1/2 inch we ride some real rugged terrain ive only washed my rear skid a few times ...but I am cautious of rocks and debris hitting my skid

I'm running 22's on my 400 and I think it's a great trail setup. The only problem I had was the low end gearing. Under most circumstances it was fine, but when you try and take off or turn around on a steep incline, it required some clutch slipping. On the flip side 2nd gear is now great for crusing tight trails. You can basically run them at idle, the gas tank lasts for ever. I recently went up to a 40t on the rear to get a little more power on the hills. And IMO it's almost perfect for my riding now. I would say go for it...
