painting your atv plastics

hi guys i notice alot of people asking about how to paint there atv plastics. let me start out by saying it is not hard but not simple. the one thing that i always have done is to flash the plastic what that is is to heat up the plastics a 2 by 2 are with a torch or heat gun then spry it with 90 to 95 alcohal to get the oils and things out of the plastics that provent the paint from sticking for a long time so if u want to take the time that is the first step. after that step u need to sand the plastics with 220 wet sand paper clean the plastics when done with alcohal and put on to light coats of paint. let it dry for 6 hours then sand it with 320 and do the same thing always doing good prep. next you will use a 600 wet sand paper sand and paint the same as every other time. you will need to do this process with the 600 3 to 4 times to fill in the scratches and build them up. after u are satified with the filling in of the scratches you will do the same process with 800 or 1000 wet 2 times then put on your final 4 coats of paint let it dry for 1 week and you are good to go with paint that will bond good and strong for a long time. i hope this helps but you can take short cuts this is just how to get the best finish. PREP AND SAND IS KEY.

Performance Bodies inc sells a primer that makes just about any decent paint stick to plastic. Its used when you want to paint the plastic nose cones of Dirt Track stock cars a color other than their standard white or black. Trust me, this stuff works, and I never did anything other than wipe the nosecones down with a rag.

I always use a plastic adhesion promoter to get my paint to stick better, but as mentioned above prep is KEY. If your not gonna bother with doing the prep right don't waste your time painting it. Its way easier to sand before you paint than it is to sand the paint off and then do the prep right before repainting.
